Pisa 05/05/2026 – Antonella Scarfone
In an age that celebrates the surface, Jana Büttner's gesture is an act against the current: a stubborn return to depth, to interiority, to the matter that does not lie.
Her sculptures don't simply represent bodies; they are emotional territories, sensitive maps of what happens inside, in the places where words get stuck and skin is no longer enough to contain.
“"Under the Skin" is the place where everything happens: the unsaid, the restrained, the fragile, pulsating. It is here that Büttner directs his gaze, delving into the tension of a contracted muscle, the posture suggesting an invisible weight, the curve of a back that seems to hold an entire story. His figures, suspended between vulnerability and resistance, reveal the exact moment when an emotion becomes form.
The materials—clay, resin, bronze—arise from the gestures of the hands, which shape not only anatomies but also states of mind. Clay preserves imprints and imperfections, as if they were evidence of the artist's presence. Bronze lends gravity, transforming fragility into a monument. Resin, on the other hand, allows light to penetrate, circulate, and reveal subtle layers like newly surfaced thoughts. Each material carries with it an emotional quality: opaqueness, resistance, transparency.
Büttner's figures are not heroes, nor portraits; they are human beings captured in a moment of truth, when the armor crumbles and only the essential remains. Some seem to support a weight; others withdraw into themselves, as if listening to an internal movement. Still others reach out toward an immaterial elsewhere, in a precarious balance that is the hallmark of our human condition.
Jana Büttner's sculptures remind us that beneath the surface of the body lies a complex and inexhaustible world. A territory worth exploring, because it is there that the most authentic beauty lies: the beauty that lives within, that connects us to others, that makes us human.
